Over the past seven years, the prevalence of obesity has hovered at around 36% for adults and at about 17% among children and adolescents, moncler jackets two separate CDC research teams reported online in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
The findings in children offer hope against grimmer figures predicted by previous research, Cynthia Ogden, PhD, of the National Center for Health Statistics, and colleagues wrote.
"Some have suggested that the prevalence of obesity among children will reach 30% by 2030, but the data presented herein suggest that the rapid increases in obesity prevalence seen in the 1980s and 1990s have not continued in this decade and may be leveling off," they wrote.
Action Points
Still, certain groups of kids -- particularly teenage boys -- may be at greater risk of obesity than others, they warned. Between 1999 and 2010, this group appeared to drive an increase in obesity prevalence, they reported.
For their study, Ogden and colleagues looked at data on 4,111 children and adolescents from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009-2010 and compared it with earlier data from the study series.
During the most recent time period, they found cheap moncler jackets 16.9% of children ages 2 to 19 were obese, and the prevalence was higher among males than females (18.6% versus 15%, P=0.01).
It also was higher among Hispanic and black children than whites, they reported (21.1% and 24.3%, respectively, versus 14%).
Even though childhood obesity rose in the 1980s and 1990s, the researchers said, there were no significant changes in prevalence between 2003 and 2010.
There was, however, a significant increase in obesity prevalence between 1999 and 2010 among males (OR 1.05, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.10), which was largely driven by teenage boys. Those ages 12 to 19 were the only age group to have a significant increase in obesity during that time (P=0.04).
The researchers also found that 31.8% of children and teens were overweight or obese in the last year of the survey.
The adult study found that obesity in that group also appears to be flat-lining, with no significant changes in prevalence between 2003 and 2010. That's contrary to the 20 years prior -- from 1980 to 2000 -- when prevalence was moncler on the rise, the researchers reported.
It had been flat prior to that, between 1960 and 1980, they said.
Like the childhood obesity researchers, Katherine Flegal, PhD, of the National Center for Health Statistics, and colleagues also used data from NHANES 2009-2010, but they studied data on 5,926 adults. They also analyzed data from previous NHANES studies from 1999-2008 totaling 22,847 adults.
The overall prevalence of obesity in the most recent period was 35.7% among men and 35.8% among women, they found, and ranged from 36.2% in white men to 38.8% in black men, and from 32.2% in white women to 58.5% in black women.
Prevalence of overweight and obesity combined in 2009-2010 was 68.8%, and the mean body mass index [BMI] for both men and women was 28.7.
Although obesity prevalence didn't rise for all women between 1999 and 2010, there were significant increases among black and Mexican American women, they reported (P=0.04 and P=0.046).
Men, on the other hand, had a significant jump in obesity prevalence over that time (AOR 1.04, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.06, P<0.001). However, rates appeared to cheap moncler plateau around 2003 for both men and women, they found, noting that prior "increases [in obesity] appear to be slowing or leveling off."

Erickson offered best wishes to Paterno
Erickson faced alumni for the third time in three days Friday night in lower Manhattan to answer questions in the wake of the child moncler jackets sexual charges against longtime football assistant Jerry Sandusky. As with the previous meetings in Pittsburgh and outside Philadelphia, the sometimes-tense town hall style event included multiple questions about Paterno's firing.
Erickson offered best wishes to Paterno, who was readmitted to the hospital Friday with complications from lung cancer treatment. He said he supported the Board of Trustees' decision to fire the Hall of Fame coach because "the ability to lead was compromised."
About 300 alumni attended the sometimes heated 90-minute session - the last of a series of meetings intended to calm anger about how the university has dealt with a child sex abuse scandal involving longtime assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.
Instead, the sessions have triggered more anguish and another round of introspection for the people who love the school and its football program.
That was apparent from the very first question from the audience Friday night - "where is the due process for Joe Paterno?"
The teary-eyed young woman's question was greeted with about 30 seconds of applause.
But so, too, were comments - including "evil moncler jackets for men flourishes when good men do nothing" - that supported Paterno's dismissal,
In his opening remarks Erickson said he "bleeds blue and white" and that these meetings with alumni were evidence of his commitment to create an atmosphere of greater openness and communication.
It's that perceived lack of communication by trustees in the two months since Paterno's firing on Nov. 9 that has roiled many graduates.
"What you hear over and over is `transparency,"' said Troy Krone, Class of 1995, of alums' biggest concern before Friday's town hall. "It didn't sound like that was coming out too clearly (in the first two meetings)."
Still, he understands why the university would hold the events now even if Erickson can't fully answer many queries yet.
"They'll probably have to do a second road show," he said.
Gene Burak, Class of 1967, said he wanted to hear about the future, not the past.
"I'm not looking for a rehash," he said. "I've read enough about that stuff in articles and blogs."
The harshest criticism at stops this week, including in suburban Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, were reserved for the school's Board of Trustees and its actions in the immediate aftermath of the criminal charges against Sandusky, a retired defensive coordinator.
The 67-year-old Sandusky is charged with sexually abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period. He maintains his innocence and remains out on $250,000 bail while awaiting trial. A charity he founded called The Second Mile, through which he met many of his alleged victims, said Friday it was selling a 60-acre property where it had been building an educational center.
Two Penn State administrators are facing charges they lied to a grand jury investigating Sandusky and failed to properly report suspected child abuse. Gary Schultz, a former vice president, and Tim Curley, the athletic director, have denied moncler jackets 2011 the allegations and await trial.
Paterno in early 2002 passed along a report of alleged sex abuse by Sandusky to his bosses but did not notify police. However, Paterno is not a target of the criminal investigation.
Erickson withstood the heat of perhaps two dozen questions over 90 minutes. A day after saying he supported the board's decision to fire Paterno, he acknowledged Friday that he, too, was in favor of the move.
"The issue came down to a question of ability to lead under that set of circumstances," Erickson said.
Paterno initially announced his retirement at the end of the season on the morning of Nov. 9. That day, he called the scandal "one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more."
But trustees fired him about 12 hours later in a hastily called news conference.
The 85-year-old Paterno continues to undergo a "regimen of treatments" after being diagnosed two months ago with what his family has termed a treatable form of lung cancer.
"Certainly my best wishes cheap moncler go out to Joe and his family," Erickson said. "I was very sad to hear that Joe was back in the hospital for complications from his chemo. We certainly wish Joe a complete recovery."

Here are some of the other key points
FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski made that comment Wednesday in a talk at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, moncler jackets as he made the case that America needs to drive universal broadband adoption by the end of the decade – and that to get there, we need incentive spectrum auctions to free up more space for wireless Internet service.
“We need ubiquitous broadband,” he says.
Here are some of the other key points he made in his remarks:
His takeaways from the show: over 3,000 companies on the show floor at CES this year.
Virtually every product on the CES floor is fueled by broadband Internet. Wired and wireless. If you shut off the Internet, virtually nothing on the CES floor would work.
Found on the floor: Smart textbooks, smart appliances, smart thermostats, smart health and fitness equipment.
The value of almost every device at the show goes up as bandwidth goes up.
We need ubiquitous broadband, Moncler Men Vest - Cheap Moncler Jackets he says. That means world-class wired and wireless infrastructure.
If we don’t create innovation zones based on massive broadband, jobs will flow to countries that do.
We need universal broadband adoption
Julius Genachowski: Time for incentive spectrum auctions.
100 million Americans do not have broadband at home.
He says they are taking steps to address the issues.
He says they have removed barriers to wired and wireless broadband buildout.
He says they are driving public/private initiatives to drive the industry. 100,000 broadband-enabled customer service jobs to be added in the next two years.
The opportunities of broadband economy are huge; so are the challenges.
Greatest opportunites/challenges in mobile broadband. We have more 3G subscribers than any other country in the world; U.S. has strong early land in 4G.
Genachowski is making the case for incentive auction. Spectrum owners turn in bandwidth; it would be auctioned off. He says they can generate $25 billion for the Treasury. “We need to get it done now, and we we need to get it done right.”
He notes that U.S. is first country to free up white space for unlicensed spectrum.
He notes that they have been sounding the alarm about a “spectrum crunch’ for three years. (Nowhere is there a bigger spectrum crunch than at CES, where getting connectivity is a major challenge.)
Genachowski says if they do not authorize incentive auctions, we will be swamped with demand and face slower speed and higher prices; innovators will be incentivized to launch in other countries, resulting in lost jobs and innovation.Moncler mens jackets, cheap moncler jackets for men, 70% off.
He cautions that getting it right is as important to get it done. Senate Commerce Committee voted 21-4 to give FCC authority to operate incentive auctions. There are sticking points. It would be wrong to prejudge to micro-manage FCC auctions. He says 112 leading economists wrote that giving the authority to offer incentive auctions with flexible rules would drive growth.
Genachowski is concerned about attempts to set rules in advance of any auctions that would restrict designating any spectrum for unlicensed use. (WiFi is unlicensed for instance.) Cordeless phones and Bluetooth also run on unlicensed spectrum. He says wireless carriers now embrace WiFi as part of their networks.
The second issue wants to stop the FCC from imposing eligibility rules for auctions. Genachowski says spectrum planning is complex and technical work. He says they should resist desire to be overly proscriptive in any auction.
At stake in this issue a America’s lead in broadband, he says. Capital can flow anywhere, and so can jobs.
He says Net creates 2.6 jobs for every 1 it eliminates. And all over the country, not just in Silicon Valley.
Genachowski says graph it any way you look at it, demand is going up, but infrastructure was never prepared for it. We have to take it seriously, he says.
New York does not need 28 broadcast cheap moncler television licenses, Genachowski says.
Asked about his legacy running the FCC, Genachowski says he is proud of the fact that he has focused the FCC on broadband.

We understand that our record will be scrutinized
Amid anecdotal evidence on both sides, moncler jackets the full record has largely escaped a close look, because so many transactions are involved. The Wall Street Journal, aiming for a comprehensive assessment, examined 77 businesses Bain invested in while Mr. Romney led the firm from its 1984 start until early 1999, to see how they fared during Bain's involvement and shortly afterward.
Among the findings: 22% either filed for bankruptcy reorganization or closed their doors by the end of the eighth year after Bain first invested, sometimes with substantial job losses. An additional 8% ran into so much trouble that all of the money Bain invested was lost.
Another finding was that Bain produced stellar returns for its investors—yet the bulk of these came from just a small number of its investments. Ten deals produced more than 70% of the dollar gains.
Some of those companies, too, later ran into trouble. Of the 10 businesses on which Bain investors scored their biggest gains, four later landed in bankruptcy court.

BAIN
A spokesman for Bain Capital said its "success rate in growing and turning around businesses in both strong and weak economic periods is very high…" The company called the Journal's analysis "inaccurate and misleading" and said it unfairly put the onus on Bain for events at companies after it no longer owned them.
Seeking the protection of a bankruptcy court isn't necessarily a sign of long-term business failure. Many of the Bain companies emerged from reorganization healthier, just as, for instance, General Motors did a few years ago. But while bankruptcy filings aren't a perfect measure of performance, they provide a way to assess a disparate array of target businesses that in many cases weren't required to make public financial filings.
The Journal's findings could provide fodder for both critics and supporters of Mr. Romney's presidential ambitions and of his role at Bain. Some experts, while conceding that available studies don't provide a direct comparison, said the rate at which the firms Bain invested in ran into trouble appears to be higher than experienced by some rival buyout firms during the era.
That notion could undermine a central 60% off moncler jackets thrust of Mr. Romney's campaign message: that his private-sector experience building companies makes him the best candidate to turn around the ailing U.S. economy.
The numbers, however, also reflect Bain's investing style, which, particularly during the firm's early years, was focused on smaller and sometimes troubled companies that Bain hoped to fix or build.
Bain was investing in "riskier deals," said Steven N. Kaplan, a finance professor at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business. "For every one that went bankrupt, they had one that was a screaming success. The overall effect was terrific performance" for the firm's investors.
The Journal analysis shows that in total, Bain produced about $2.5 billion in gains for its investors in the 77 deals, on about $1.1 billion invested. Overall, Bain recorded roughly 50% to 80% annual gains in this period, which experts said was among the best track records for buyout firms in that era.
Some of the companies that ran into trouble did so after Bain was no longer involved and new owners had taken charge. Bain declined to provide information on when its involvement in its investments ended.
The Journal chose to look at target companies' fates by the end of the eighth year after Bain's initial investment, which appears close to the maximum time that Bain remained in control of any of its targets. Academic research has shown that buyout firms during this era exited their deals on average after 5? years, but in a large percentage of cases were still involved beyond seven years.
Bain backers argue that it is unfair to tag the firm with any bankruptcy that occurred several years after it took a company public or sold it. Others have said the firm and its former leader could still bear some responsibility for failing to leave a company in strong shape.
Bain said the evaluation "uses a fundamentally flawed methodology that unfairly assigns responsibility to us for many events that occurred in companies when we did not own or control them, and disregards dozens of successful venture capital investments."
Bain added: "We understand that our record will be scrutinized and distorted during the political campaign involving our partner who retired 12 years ago, but our focus remains on working with management teams to build great companies and improve their operations."
If the Journal analysis were limited to bankruptcies and closures occurring by the end of the fifth year after Bain first invested, the rate would move down to 12%. That measure would exclude several cases that have brought Mr. Romney political criticism, where businesses filed for bankruptcy seven or eight years after Bain's investment.
Mr. Romney has told potential voters how cheap moncler vest at Bain he helped launch or rebuild companies such as Staples Inc., Domino's Pizza Inc. and Sports Authority Inc., creating more than 100,000 jobs.
His rivals have sought to turn his Bain tenure against him. Rick Perry has run an ad saying Mr. Romney "made millions buying companies and laying off workers." Newt Gingrich has said Mr. Romney should "give back all the money he's earned from bankrupting companies and laying off employees over his years at Bain."
Mr. Gingrich laced into Mr. Romney at this weekend's debates, and a group associated with the former House Speaker plans to release a 28-minute documentary blistering Mr. Romney's Bain tenure. Meanwhile, on ABC on Sunday, Obama strategist David Axelrod criticized Mr. Romney as "a corporate raider."
Mr. Romney describes job losses and bankruptcies as an inevitable byproduct of the capitalist system, and has said that in some cases, eliminating some jobs may save the rest of the company. In response to Mr. Gingrich, Mr. Romney said: "Doesn't he understand how the economy works? In the real economy, some businesses succeed and some fail."
Asked in an interview about Bain's bankruptcy and failure rate, Mr. Romney said that in buyout deals, "our orientation was by and large to acquire businesses that were out of favor and in some cases in trouble." He added that Bain wasn't the type of firm that stripped companies cheap moncler and fired workers, but instead, "our approach was to try to build a business. We were not always successful."

If one tiny benefit has come out of this scandal
Jean-Claude Mas, the company’s elderly founder, reportedly told police last November that he had been concealing the material used in his implants since 1997. His PIP gel cost a fraction of the price of the officially approved Nusil gel, moncler jackets and he allegedly described it as “better”. The women who have received PIP implants, which many have come to regard as ticking time-bombs in their chests, are unlikely to agree.
If one tiny benefit has come out of this scandal – which will cause enormous distress and potential injury to so many – it has been the stripping away of glossy euphemism from the cosmetic surgery industry. Over the years, what was initially regarded as a bizarre lunacy, the stitching of a silicone bag into a healthy female breast, has become increasingly normalised, particularly among younger women.
We have got used to the sight of bullet-proof breasts that point skywards, and the cheery chat of “boob-jobs” and “double-Ds”. In the ubiquitous advertisements for cosmetic surgery clinics, and within their consulting rooms, the buzz-words are of “fullness”, “pertness” and “enhanced femininity”. (Which is clearly code for “big breasts” – except it doesn’t make sense. We can all admire a Marilyn Monroe, but no one could accuse the slenderer forms of Kate Moss, Vanessa Paradis, or Audrey Hepburn of lacking “femininity”.)
Somehow, the recent talk of PIP implants rupturing and leaking industrial-grade silicone into lymph nodes – and the sight of a removed, faulty implant spooling into viscous yellow strands like a nicotine-stained tramp’s beard – doesn’t sit well with the dream. And nor should it. For the truth is that post-operative problems are not confined to PIP implants: there is always a risk of rupture and leakage, although at least the official ones contain medical grade silicone, not the material for sofa stuffing.
A common complication after breast augmentation surgery is “capsular contracture”, during which scar tissue hardens painfully around the implant. This can be treated by the surgeon squeezing it manually until the “scar envelope” cracks open, or by the patient undergoing yet more incisions.
Feeling queasy yet? I am. Still, around 25,000 British women have breast augmentation each year, and it is estimated that only 5 per cent of that is for reconstructive purposes. They are caught up too powerfully in the dream of a better, bustier moncler jackets for men them to be deterred by dreary talk of complications.
To read the comments on chat forums hosted by cosmetic surgery groups such as MYA (Make Yourself Amazing) is to get a taster of the fizzing mixture of excitement and apprehension experienced by those who have just undergone, or are about to undergo, breast surgery.
There is talk of having diligently saved up, and detailed technical discussion of surgeons, and of sizes, shapes and brands of implants. There is a deluge of pre-op advice (in one case: “Go as big as your surgeon will let you”) and chat of post-op pain. The tone is sisterly, supportive, sometimes frightened: “I’ve convinced myself I’m going to die on the operating table… but at the same time I really want these boobs, like, more than anything.” Some writers admit that the moment they have one procedure, they are eager for another. In the quest for physical improvement, they can never be satisfied.
And then, on another website, there is discussion about PIP implants which have ruptured, the clunky, reluctant bureaucracy of removal and replacement, and the terrible worry: in these cases, the dream is already dead.
Reading it all, I cannot help but wonder what, exactly, the dream is really made from. Make Yourself Amazing, indeed. I don’t think it’s for men per se, who as husbands or boyfriends are rarely the driving force behind women’s surgery, although there may be the desire to attract male attention. I think it’s more from the conviction that women must endure painful, risky things to make themselves amazing, because they will never be amazing enough as they are.
When you think about it like that, it’s enough to make you feel a bit sad.
Garrulous ghosts in the machine
I’ve heard of a horse-whisperer, of course, but until last week I had no idea of the existence of ghost-twitterers, although apparently the profession has been practising for some time. Moncler jackets for women, cheap moncler women down jackets on sale.A ghost-twitterer is employed to send tweets while pretending to be someone else, and one of this shadowy band spectacularly outed himself in error last week.
Jason Hall, racing correspondent for a local newspaper, was tweeting on behalf of the Channel 4 pundit Simon Holt, when he accidentally made public a message intended for his own wife: “Oh and by the way, I want your hot body tonight babe xxxxx”. Cue much speculation, hilarity, and at least one very red face at Plumpton racecourse. Add to that the fact that the widespread excitement over Wendi Deng joining Twitter, and apparently flirting with Ricky Gervais, turned out to be misplaced when the account was revealed as a hoax. Finally, there was the case of Diane Abbott, who apparently forgot that Twitter is a very public forum and that when white folk aren’t off “playing divide and rule”, some of them can also read.
It’s all been a sharp reminder that Twitter, with its deceptive illusions of intimacy for both twitterer and follower, can be a slippery arena. And that perhaps there’s only one thing worse than being caught out using a ghost-twitterer, and that’s realising – once you have tweeted straight into a pile of trouble – that there is no one else to blame.
Yellow lines mean ready cash
A grim glimpse into the world of the parking warden has been provided by a tribunal for the case of Hakim Berkani. He was sacked by the London Borough of Kensington & Chelsea’s parking firm, NSL, allegedly for refusing to issue large numbers of tickets without proper cause. Mr Berkani – a hero to local residents – claimed that the parking operation was “designed to extract as much cash as possible, by fair means or foul, from the motoring public”. NSL denies the allegation.
It is perhaps unfortunate for NSL, however, that Mr Berkani’s claims chime so exactly with public perception. Most people accept the need to regulate parking, but the indecent zeal of the wardens leaves drivers feeling like carp in cheap moncler an increasingly tight barrel. Everyone has their own tale of an inflexible parking warden who smears a patina of mean-mindedness across the day, but it is worth considering the extreme pressures placed on individuals who might otherwise be reasonable.
No one in this country has ever been sued for giving epinephrine
Ammaria Johnson, 7, died Monday after suffering an allergic reaction during recess at her Chesterfield County moncler jackets elementary school, Hopkins Elementary.
"She came to the school clinic after feeling she had hives and shortness of breath," Lt. Jason Elmore, a spokesman for the Chesterfield County Fire Department, told ABC News. It's unclear how long Johnson was in the clinic before school officials called 911 at 2:26 p.m.
"When emergency crews arrived, she was already in cardiac arrest in the clinic," said Elmore.
Johnson was rushed to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
What caused the reaction is still under investigation, but Johnson's mother, Laura Pendleton, told local reporters the girl had a peanut allergy.
"We can only assume that at this time," said Elmore. "We have EMS protocols in place for allergic reactions and we performed those in hopes of saving her life, but unfortunately this time we could not."
Calls to Pendleton were not immediately returned. She arrived at the hospital after Johnson had died, Elmore said.
The death is still under investigation by the Chesterfield County Police Department, according to a spokeswoman, but the state medical examiner will not be involved.
Experts say Johnson could have been saved by an EpiPen -- a device that injects epinephrine, currently available only by prescription.
"The epinephrine reverses severe moncler jackets symptoms, giving time to get the person to an emergency room for monitoring and more care," said Dr. Scott Sicherer of the Jaffe Food Allergy Institute at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.
But Hopkins Elementary had no such device on hand for Johnson.
Chesterfield County school policy states that parents are responsible for providing the school "with all daily and emergency medications prescribed by the student's health-care provider," and keeping medications up to date.
"For any medication, the school would have to be in possession of that medication to provide it," said Shawn Smith, a spokesman for Chesterfield County Public Schools. Even if the school had an EpiPen prescribed for another student, they would not be able to use it.
"The medication we receive, or should receive, has to be specific to that child, whether it's over-the-counter or prescription," Smith said.
Smith declined to comment on Johnson's case specifically, but said managing severe allergies starts at home.
"At the beginning of the school year, we sent information to parents outlining the different responsibilities for the family and the child, the principal, the teacher, the doctor and the nurse," he said. "First and foremost, is does begin at home. Working with their doctor, the family would outline a health care plan that deals with those severe allergies."
Pendleton told local reporters her daughter did have a plan, but said the school refused to take Johnson's EpiPen and failed to give her Benedryl -- an over-the-counter antihistamine also listed in her plan -- at the first sign of a reaction.
Because severe allergies can develop without warning, some experts say schools should stock EpiPens like bandages and other first-aid supplies.
"There are kids who don't know they're food allergic until they get into the food," said Dr. Dan Atkins, head of ambulatory pediatric at National Jewish Health in Denver. "In that situation, it would be good to have an EpiPen available."
A school EpiPen stash could soon be a reality with a proposed bill that would encourage states to adopt laws requiring schools to have EpiPens on hand. The School Access to Emergency Epinephrine Act, proposed in December 2011, would mean EpiPens could be used for any student or staff member in an anaphylactic emergency.
"When it comes to a life-threatening allergic reaction, it's so simple to save that life," said Maria Acebal, chief executive officer of the Fairfax, Va.-based Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network, which championed the bill.Moncler women boots cheap sale, 2011 moncler winter boots outlet. "I have no doubt that the school where this little girl went had an EpiPen in the office -- it just didn't have Ammaria's name on it."
The bill would include liability protection for school officials who give epinephrine in good faith, Acebal said.
"No one in this country has ever been sued for giving epinephrine, to my knowledge," said Acebal. "All the lawsuits come about because school officials don't give it when it's needed."
In a healthy child, epinephrine can cause a rapid heart rate, nausea and light-headedness -- mild symptoms that wear off in 15 minutes. It would only be dangerous in children born with a congenital heart condition, which school officials would be aware of.
"We need to do a better job of educating the public about the safety of epinephrine," said Atkins. "Because it's an injection, it scares people. And because it's a device, it scares people. But rather than thinking, 'I might kill a kid with this,' they should be thinking, 'I could save a life.'"
Acebal, whose eldest daughter has a food allergy, said her other children learned how to inject epinephrine by age 6.
"If I can teach a 6-year-old to do it, we can teach school staff," she said.
Acebal said having epinephrine cheap moncler on hand in school would give students, staff and parents added peace of mind.

There have been short supplies of drugs to treat infections
That's no surprise to people who've gone from pharmacy to pharmacy trying to fill their child's prescription -- or to moncler jackets those who've had to pay high prices for brand-name drugs to treat ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
The drugs in question are stimulants that calm and focus people with ADHD. The shortages have affected the two main classes of ADHD drugs: methylphenidates and amphetamines.
Some popular drugs, such as Novartis' Ritalin LA, are in short supply in some dosages but not in others. Other drugs, such as Teva's extended-release amphetamine, are on back order. Still others, such as Shire's Adderall XR and its two "authorized generics" are in good supply, according to the FDA and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
One reason for the shortage is extremely high demand for the drugs. While people with ADHD make up nearly all of the legitimate market, there's a huge demand for off-label and illicit use of stimulant drugs. Many companies say they simply can't keep up with this demand.
So why don't the companies simply make more ADHD drugs? One reason is that these drugs are controlled substances. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) decides how much of each controlled substance the U.S. legitimately needs -- and then sets quotas on how much manufacturers can produce.
Since 2007, the U.S. has been limited to 50,000 kilograms of methylphenidate. The amphetamine quota went up to 18,600 kilograms in 2009. Several drugmakers have publicly stated that these constraints have cheap moncler jackets limited their ability to meet demand.
"The DEA's point of view is there is plenty of the active ingredient out there," DEA spokeswoman Barbara Carreno tells WebMD. "The DEA is tasked with making sure there is enough for legitimate need without making so much (that) it is diverted for illicit purposes. So we try to ascertain the legitimate medical need in America and make sure there is enough out there to meet it."
Last month, the DEA announced that the 2012 quota for methylphenidate will increase to 56,000 kilograms, and the quota for amphetamine will increase to 25,300 kilograms. It remains to be seen whether these increases will ease ADHD drug shortages.
Shortage Points to Bigger Problem
The shortage of ADHD drugs is a symptom of a larger problem facing the nation's drug supply. Supplies of many different kinds of drugs are becoming hard to predict.
According to IMS, a medical informatics firm, more than 80% of drug shortages are generics. Cancer drugs are particularly likely to be in short supply. They made up 28% of all shortages in 2010 to 2011, the FDA reports.
But it's not just cancer. There have been short supplies of drugs to treat infections, heart disease, nervous system disorders, and pain, IMS reports.
In October 2011, the FDA issued a special report on drug shortages. Among its findings:
From 2005 to 2010, the number of drug shortages tripled from 61 to 178.
The leading reasons for drug shortages are problems at the manufacturing facility (43%), delays in manufacturing or shipping (15%), and shortages of the active ingredient (10%).

And the less that gets disseminated to the public
David Caplan, a celebrity-news editor who has worked at People and Star, noted that confirming separations during a busy time falls under "PR 101." "Burying a celeb split over a holiday is a time-honored celeb tradition, really kicked off by Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey back in the day, when they finally split and announced it the night before Thanksgiving," he explained. "From a logistics point of view, news outlets, particularly the celebrity media, are either shut down or working with a skeletal staff, so pursuing the story and advancing it is difficult since it simply means there are less reporters available to dig further and to disseminate the story to the public," he noted. H5N1 bird flu virus is extremely deadly
The World Health Organization (WHO) warns researchers about the risks involved in bird flu virus research, especially the moncler jackets pathogenic strain called H5N1. The H5N1 strain has been identified as easily transmissable, posing potentially negative consequences to humans, such as lethal human pandemics.
Currently, there are centers that conduct H5N1 strain research, including The Netherlands and the United States. H5N1 bird flu virus is extremely deadly. People who have direct contact with infected birds are at high risk for transmission.
In 1997, the virus was first detected, when about 600 people had contracted the virus, resulting in over half of the victims dying. Since then, researchers have been working to identify which mutation(s) enable the H5N1 virus to easily spread from person to person and to maintain its pathogenicity.
Since then, in 2003, the bird flu virus infected 573 people and killed 336 people. And most recently, a 39-year-old man in Hong Kong was suspected of contracting the virus in December.Moncler jackets, cheap moncler vest, moncler boots 2011 outlet. H5N1 virus is a serious issue and the results from its research poses potential threats to global health, especially if a specific mutation is identified to increase pathogenicity. Thus, the U.S. security advisers are concerned about publishing the details of the research being performed in these research centers because the information could potentially be used to create bioterror weapons for other countries or groups. As a result, the U.S. National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity has urged research journals to redact versions of experiments, spurring mixed opinions.Cheap moncler scarves caps, 2011 moncler accessories for sale.

Dawkins watched Thursday’s practice from the sideline
The New England Patriots quarterback had missed Wednesday’s session, but the team said his absence was not injury-related.
Brady was listed on Thursday’s moncler jackets report as having participated on a limited basis with the shoulder injury. He was one of 17 Patriots listed as participating on a limited basis, meaning a player took part in fewer than 100 percent of his normal repetitions.
He was injured during the fourth quarter of New England’s win over Miami last Saturday.
Against Buffalo on Sunday, Brady has a chance for the fourth 5,000-yard passing season, needing just 103. Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints set the NFL record of 5,087 Monday night, three more than the mark set by Dan Marino of the Miami Dolphins in 1984.
The Patriots (12-3) have clinched a first-round bye and can lock up home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs with a win or tie.
Steelers’ Roethlisberger intends to play in finale

Against Buffalo on Sunday, Brady has a chance for the fourth 5,000-yard passing season, needing just 103. Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints set the NFL record of 5,087 Monday night, three more than the mark set by Dan Marino of the Miami Dolphins in 1984.
The Patriots (12-3) have clinched a first-round bye and can lock up home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs with a win or tie.

Teen smokers are receptive to messages about staining their teeth
The National Cancer Institute is rolling out a new quitting program aimed at teens. It now includes a website (teen.smokefree.gov) moncler jackets and texting support, and in January it will add a smartphone application, says Erik Auguston, a behavioral scientist at the institute.
The program joins others with the same aim: Helping teen smokers quit before they become chronic adult smokers. It comes on the heels of new data showing teen smoking rates are dropping again after stagnating for a while.
But it's hardly good news that 19% of teens smoke by 12th grade, says Lloyd Johnston, a researcher at the University of Michigan who leads an annual study tracking teen smoking, drinking and drug use. Previous research suggests most of those teens will keep smoking and some light smokers will become heavy smokers, he says.
"From a health viewpoint, (tobacco) is probably the most important of all the drugs," Johnston says. "There's no other product, legal or illegal, that kills as many people."
But teens are not very receptive to messages about diseases they won't develop for decades or to programs aimed at adults, Auguston says: "Traditionally, teens and young adults have not actively engaged in quitting smoking. Moncler bags outlet, buy cheap moncler 2011 new bags. They are more in the uptake process." And when they do try to quit, Auguston says, they often go it alone and fail.
The Smokefree Teen program relies upon:
•Messages that emphasize teens are in charge. One slogan on the site about teens and their health decisions: "We're NOT going to tell you what to do."
•Materials that focus on teen-specific triggers. Those include mood, social life, test anxiety and peer pressure.
•Technologies teens use. Teens who want to quit can text QUIT to iQUIT (47848) to start getting helpful messages or go to the website to connect with counselors via instant messaging or phone. They also can join support networks on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr.
The program "is a gigantic step in the right direction," says Alexander Prokhorov, a behavioral scientist at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston who has develped anti-smoking programs for teens.
Teen smokers are receptive to messages about staining their teeth, smelling bad, wasting money, harming the environment — cheap moncler men vest medleys shiny puffy black and even the fact that their smoke can hurt their siblings and pets, he says. That kind of information, he says, is "eye-popping to many of them."

The judge ruled it is likely the cigarette makers would succeed in a lawsuit to block the requirement that the labels be placed on cigarette packs next year.
Representatives for R.J. Reynolds declined to comment. Officials with Lorillard did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment Saturday.
The tobacco companies have questioned the constitutionality of the labels, saying the warnings don't simply convey facts to inform people's decision whether to smoke but instead force the cigarette makers to display government anti-smoking advocacy more prominently than their own branding. They also say that changing cigarette packaging will cost millions of dollars.
Meanwhile, the FDA has said that the public interest in conveying the dangers of smoking outweighs the companies' free speech rights.
In the filing Friday, the attorneys general said that the First Amendment does not prevent the government from requiring that "lethal and addictive products carry warning labels that effectively inform consumers of the risks those products entail."
"Over forty years' experience with small, obscurely placed text-only warning labels on cigarette packs has demonstrated that they simply do not work," they wrote. "The warning labels reflect the unique magnitude of the problem they address, the deadly and addictive nature of the product, and the unparalleled threat this product and its marketing pose to America's youth."
The brief was filed by attorneys general from Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, the Virgin Islands, Washington and West Virginia.
In June, the FDA approved nine new warning labels that companies are to print on the entire top half of cigarette packs, front and back.Moncler jackets for women, cheap moncler women down jackets on sale. The new warnings, each of which includes a number for a stop-smoking hotline, must constitute 20 percent of cigarette advertising, and marketers are to rotate use of the images.
One label depicts a corpse with its chest sewn up and the words "Smoking can kill you." Another shows a healthy pair of lungs beside a yellow and black pair with a warning that smoking causes fatal lung disease.
Joining North Carolina-based R.J. Reynolds and Lorillard in the lawsuit are Commonwealth Brands Inc., Liggett Group LLC and Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company Inc.
Richmond-based Altria Group Inc., parent company of the nation's largest cigarette maker, Philip Morris USA, which makes top-selling Marlboros, is not a part of the lawsuit.
The free speech lawsuit is separate from a lawsuit by several of the same companies over the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. That law, which took effect two years ago, cleared the way for the more graphic warning labels. But it also allowed the FDA to limit nicotine and banned tobacco companies from sponsoring athletic or social events or giving away free samples or branded merchandise.
A federal judge upheld many parts of the law, but the case is now pending before the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati.
While the tobacco industry's latest legal challenge may not hold up, it could delay the new warning moncler 2011 winter special offer for men big promotion labels for years. And that is likely to save cigarette makers millions of dollars in lost sales and increased packaging costs.

The 48-year-old star, who has returned to London following a month-long stay in a Vienna hospital, said he was "very weak" but added he feels "amazing".
In a press moncler jackets conference outside his home, an emotional Michael said he still has "plenty to live for".
He was forced to shelve the remaining 14 dates of his tour after falling ill.
Michael acknowledged the gravity of his illness, explaining that the General Hospital (AKH) in Vienna was "the best place in the world I could have been".
"They spent three weeks keeping me alive, basically... I'm incredibly fortunate to be here.
"Somebody here still thinks I've got some work to do," added the star.

He added that the "plan is to play to every person who had a ticket" for his shelved gigs.
Michael also said he wanted to play another show for the Austrian medical staff who "saved my life".
Michael was advised by doctors to take a "full and complete rest" after contracting a severe form of pneumonia last month.
He had performed 45 dates in his concert schedule before being forced to cancel the performance in Vienna.
The shelved dates have yet to be rescheduled.

The rule is sure to face legal challenges
The rule would require deep cuts in emissions of mercury, acid gases and soot from coal-fired power plants and is likely moncler jackets to help reshape the industry as companies turn off old plants and decide whether to clean up existing ones or switch to cleaner-burning fuels such as natural gas. It will cost about $9.6 billion annually to implement but will provide substantially more in health benefits each year, including 100,000 fewer heart and asthma attacks, the Environmental Protection Agency said.
The rule is sure to face legal challenges and Republicans vowed to continue as-yet unsuccessful efforts to delay it with legislation. But Wednesday's announcement was a major victory for public-health advocates who have been fighting for years for the EPA to institute the long-overdue standards. Revisions to the Clean Air Act in 1990 required reductions of mercury and other pollutants. The first power-plant standards set out by President George W. Bush's administration were rejected by a federal court in 2008.
"These standards are 22 years in the making. They have not been a surprise," said EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson. "They are based on technology and science and, we believe, based firmly in the law."
President Barack Obama, in a video posted on the White House's website, said the standards were "common sense" and "cost-effective." "It's a good day in the fight for clean air," said Mr. Obama, whose campaign website already touts the new rule.
The administration held its ground on the air-toxins rule despite objections. Some power companies and electric-grid operators said the rules will go too far, too quickly, and could put the reliability of the grid at risk.
In a nod to the reliability concerns, the Obama administration encouraged the states that will enforce the pollution standards to allow four years "when justified" for companies to install retrofits to comply with the rules, instead of the statutory three. The EPA said the rule would allow additional wiggle room to address local reliability problems if they arise.
Those gestures didn't moncler eric light black jackets for men please the industry, which had wanted a more explicit guarantee that plants needed for reliability could be kept online.
The Edison Electric Institute, which represents power firms, said it was "the most expensive rule in the agency's history."
Chip Yost, vice president for energy and resources policy at the National Association of Manufacturers, called the rule a "train wreck" and said it would burden companies also facing other pending EPA air-quality rules.
EPA projects the rule announced Wednesday will require power plants to cut emissions of mercury, a neurotoxin, by about 75% by 2016 and reduce emissions of hydrogen chloride, an acid gas that irritates the respiratory system, by 88%. Those requirements add to earlier rules calling for plants in some states to cut back on gases that form smog and soot. Other pending rules would require plants to take in less water for cooling and impose new rules for handling of coal waste.
"The EPA is being very, very aggressive in their rule-making. It takes time to engineer these changes. It takes time to switch from coal to gas," said Mr. Yost, who warned of higher costs for manufacturers and consumers.
The EPA said some 60% of the 1,400 affected coal- and oil-fired generating units already complied with the rule. Many power companies, including Exelon Corp. and Calpine Corp., support the rules because they rely less on coal-burning generation.
Others have already retrofitted plants to comply with state regulations. One of those firms— Constellation Energy Group Inc.—spent $885 million over three years to retrofit its Brandon Shores plant in Maryland, said Paul Allen, the company's chief environmental officer. "When you've invested a lot of money and when you're complying with strict rules as we have in Maryland, it doesn't come as a surprise that you believe other companies should shoulder their share," Mr. Allen said.
By contrast, American Electric moncler giacca donna 2011 pop star sub-gloss black Power Co., the nation's largest consumer of coal, has said that complying with a series of EPA regulations could cost the company between $6 billion and $8 billion through 2020. Spokeswoman Melissa McHenry said the EPA made some "improvements" but was still underestimating the cost of putting the rule in place on the agency's timeline.

After days spent hinting at the allegations against
The sensational charges drew a worried response from Washington and brought Iraq’s tenuous partnership government to the edge of collapse. A major Sunni-backed political coalition said its ministers would moncler jackets walk off their jobs, leaving adrift agencies that handle Iraq’s finances, schools and agriculture.
The accusations against Vice President Tariq al-Hashimi also underlined fears that Iraq’s leaders may now be using the very institutions America has spent millions trying to strengthen — the police, the courts, the media — as a cudgel to batter their political enemies and consolidate power.
On Monday night, Mr. Hashimi was in the northern semiautonomous region of Kurdistan, beyond the reach of security forces controlled by Baghdad. It was unclear when — or if — he would return to Baghdad.
In Washington, where officials have been quietly celebrating the end of the war, Obama administration officials sounded alarmed about the arrest order for Mr. Hashimi. “We are talking to all of the parties and expressed our concern regarding these developments,” said Tommy Vietor, the National Security Council spokesman. “We are urging all sides to work to resolve differences peacefully and through dialogue, in a manner consistent with the rule of law and the democratic political process.”
The breakdown in relations between Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki and Mr. Hashimi and his Iraqiya Party arrived at an inopportune moment for the administration, coming so close to the troop withdrawal. American officials have spent years trying to urge Iraq’s Shiite-dominated government to work with the country’s Sunni minority, and are wary of having things fall apart now.
Mr. Obama said last week, in remarks welcoming troops back to Fort Bragg, N.C., that Iraq’s future would now be “in the hands of the Iraqi people.” But having removed its combat troops, it was unclear whether the United States retained enough influence to limit sectarian tensions that some analysts say could drag the country back into the chaos and violence of past years and even split it along geographical lines.
The government made its case against Mr. Hashimi in a half-hour television broadcast that was as aggressively promoted as a prime-time special. In grainy video confessions, three men said they had committed murders on Mr. Hashimi’s behalf. They said they had blown up cars, attacked convoys with silenced pistols and were rewarded with envelopes containing $3,000 in American bills.
To government critics, the charges seemed to be part of a wide-reaching consolidation of power by Mr. Maliki. Amid the anxiety stirred by the American departure and unrest in neighboring Syria, Mr. Maliki, a Shiite, has tightened his grip on this violent and divided nation by marginalizing, intimidating or arresting his political rivals, many of whom are part of Iraq’s Sunni minority.
Hundreds of people have been swept up over the last two months in arrests aimed at former members of Saddam Hussein’s outlawed Baath Party. In recent weeks, security forces also arrested at least 30 people connected to a former prime minister, Ayad Allawi, a secular Shiite and caustic critic of Mr. Maliki, according to Mr. Allawi’s office. And on Sunday, Mr. Maliki asked Parliament to issue a vote of no confidence in his own deputy, Saleh al-Mutlaq, a sometimes hyperbolic Sunni who had compared Mr. Maliki to a dictator in an interview.
“Any leading Sunni politician seems now to be a target of this campaign by Maliki,” said Reidar Visser, an expert on Iraqi politics. “It seems that every Sunni Muslim or secularist is in danger of being labeled moncler jackets either a Baathist or a terrorist.”
Mr. Hashimi has not often been described as either. Sometimes abrasive and always self-interested, he was one of the first Sunni leaders to embrace the political process after the American invasion, and lost three siblings to terrorist attacks during the bloody height of the sectarian war.
“He was someone who tried to be conciliatory with the Shiite Islamists at a time when others did not do so,” Mr. Visser said. “Now, Maliki is going after him.”

“He was someone who tried to be conciliatory with the Shiite Islamists at a time when others did not do so,” Mr. Visser said. “Now, Maliki is going after him.”
An aide to Mr. Hashimi denounced the charges as a witch hunt. “This is a coup over all partners, on political process, on the Constitution,” said the aide, who identified himself only as Abu Aya. “This is the new dictatorship.”
Any resolution seems a distant hope. The Iraqiya coalition, a large political bloc led by Mr. Allawi that includes Mr. Hashimi, Mr. Mutlaq and many other prominent Sunnis, stopped attending sessions of Parliament on Saturday. On Monday, there were not enough lawmakers to reach a quorum, so Parliament was adjourned until Jan. 3.
On Monday night, Iraqiya members called for the president of Kurdistan, Massoud Barzani, to intervene and reprise a role the Kurds played in bringing together discordant factions and helping to resolve the long stalemate that collapsed after last year’s national elections.
The recent tumult has put Baghdad’s political elite on edge.
Inside the concrete-ringed Green Zone, the heart of Iraq’s government and home to the American Embassy, Iraqi Army tanks and Humvees have proliferated. Freshly reinforced platoons of soldiers are standing guard over intersections, and security forces have pushed to the edge of the compounds of Mr. Hashimi and other Sunni leaders.
“It’s crisis after crisis,” Mr. Mutlaq, the deputy prime minister, said in an interview. “None of the political parties want Maliki to be in this position anymore, but Maliki is controlling everything. Through his police, his army, his security measures. Everyone is afraid.”
After days spent hinting at the allegations against Mr. Hashimi, the Iraqi government chose a familiar platform to formally make its case: the televised confession. It played three confessions from Mr. Hashimi’s guards, and promised more in the days to come.
Their statements were rich with dates and names, but it was impossible to verify any of the details or to know whether security forces had used threats or force to extract information. In June, Amnesty International said Iraq’s use of televised confessions “seriously undermines the right to a fair trial.”
In the first, a man who identifies himself as Abdul Karim Mohammed al-Jabouri said that he had been working as a bodyguard for Mr. Hashimi for a few years when the vice president approached him about some dangerous but important new work. Mr. Jabouri said he signed on.
He said he would then receive orders from one of Mr. Hashimi’s subordinates. He and other guards would get a call telling them to pick up an improvised bomb from Mr. Hashimi’s offices and plant it in a busy traffic circle. Other times, they were told to assassinate an official in the Foreign Ministry using silenced pistols.
After one bombing, Mr. Jabouri said, he returned to Mr. Hashimi’s offices.
“The vice president moncler winter boots 2011 called us and he thanked us,” Mr. Jabouri said. “He gave us an envelope with money, and I thanked him.”
Abu Aya, the Hashimi aide, said on Monday night that the men in the video confessions appeared to be guards who worked in the vice president’s office. Some 10 guards for Mr. Hashimi have been arrested in the last week, according to officials with Mr. Hashimi, the government and security forces, and on Monday morning, Iraq’s high court barred Mr. Hashimi from leaving the country as the terrorism allegations were investigated.

The highly anticipated IPO stumbled out of the gate
Everyone, that is, but Mark Pincus. He didn't become the founder and CEO of the Internet's latest monster IPO by being timid or lacking verve.
"Zynga is the crowning achievement for my career," moncler jackets Pincus said in a phone interview here from Zynga's headquarters shortly before the company's Nasdaq debut. "I wanted to build a company, products and culture that mattered. It is an extension of all of us."
The highly anticipated IPO stumbled out of the gate. Zynga lost 5% in its market open. But it raised $1 billion, creating a $9 billion market value for the company, in the Internet's biggest stock offering since Google in 2004.
"This is a (seminal) event for an Internet boom," says John Doerr, a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, the largest venture investor in Zynga, who spoke before Zynga started trading. "Zynga's IPO is a commencement of a new phase (for Internet companies), and a springboard for the company."
The lackluster IPO will likely draw questions whether the opposite is true, raising the specter of another Internet crash. Zynga could at the very least be a harbinger for the IPO prospects of Facebook, a key business partner of Zynga that is expected to go public in the first half of 2012. Both sky-high valuations — Facebook is at around $80 billion now — raise typical questions about financial hype.
But despite nearly two decades of success in Silicon Valley, Pincus is not your typical tech CEO. In a field full of twentysomething leaders, Pincus, 45, could be Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's father. (Zuckerberg is 27.) Further, Pincus' moment isn't in games just by happenstance.
"Mark has been through every step of the process, and drawn every single lesson," says Marc Andreessen, a venture capitalist and co-founder of Netscape who has invested in Zynga. "Zynga is the culmination of the work he has done the last 20 years."
Pincus didn't just make popular games. He relentlessly monitored data on traffic, user behavior and employees, drawing on investment-banking chops. Zynga's sales more than doubled through September, to $829 million, and it has earned $121 million since the start of 2010, according to its SEC filing. What's more, the top five games on Facebook are Zynga titles: CityVille, CastleVille, FarmVille, Zynga Poker and Words With Friends.
About 3% of Zynga's estimated 240 million players pay for virtual goods, such as a cow in FarmVille or a machine gun in Mafia Wars, according to Zynga.
"Companies like ours show that consumer Internet services can be profitable," Pincus said.
The boyish-looking Pincus, nicknamed "Pinky" by his wife, Ali, on her Facebook page, has Zynga squarely under his thumb. He owns 38.5% of Zynga's voting power and exerts as much control over the business. Zynga's stock structure gives Pincus his own class of C shares that carry 70 times more voting power than regular A shares.
No matter how Zynga stock fares — and many may openly wonder after its underwhelming first day of trading — Pincus will make out handsomely. His stake? More than $1 billion, by some accounts.
Risk taker
The fortunes of Zynga's offering are as much a referendum on Pincus, its flashy leader, as the culmination of his rip-roaring narrative in the tech world.
The hard-charging Pincus is nothing if not a risk taker. He's started five companies and invested in many others, including Napster, Facebook, Twitter and Friendster, all of which appeared to be iffy bets initially.

In April 2007, he founded online games start-up Presidio Media, which produced Texas Hold 'Em Poker. When Presidio quickly secured $10 million in funding, Pincus renamed the company Zynga, after his dog.
Pincus got the idea for Zynga, he said, from playing against kids who routinely thrashed him in the game Rise of Nations. The ultra-competitive Pincus yearned for tools that would give him an edge. At about the same time, he became aware of companies in South Korea that sold virtual goods.
"Mark is no softie," says Eric Tilenius, former general manager of Zynga's hit game Mafia Wars. "He demands the best out of people, which leads to incredible results for the company. He's tremendously empowering and rewards success handsomely."
Pincus' hands-on approach as CEO infuses Zynga, drawing comparisons to how Steve Jobs ruled Apple. The difference, eMarketer analyst Paul Verna says, is that Pincus is "about building hit games that people are willing to spend money on."
"Jobs," Verna adds, "was about more about innovation, design and the aesthetic."
Venture capital veteran Roger McNamee cautions that an overbearing management style could drive away valuable employees, who could eventually cash out now that Zynga is public.
"His style resonates best with short-term investors … but potentially leaves body bags of overworked employees and questionable long-term valuations," says Patrick Moorhead, head of market researcher Moor Insights & Strategy. "Longer-term investors need to ask a lot of questions about long-term employee commitments and processes."
But it is exactly Pincus' approach that fuels a start-up such as Zynga, says one gaming expert. "It's in an entrepreneur's blood to naturally want to expect a certain level of personal emotional investment and commitment from colleagues," says Scott Steinberg, head of video game business consulting firm TechSavvy.
Crowning achievement
Zynga's IPO culminates a long journey for Pincus. The Chicago native studied economics at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and he started in banking. After earning an MBA at Harvard University, Pincus moved to San Francisco in 1995 to be part of the dot-com boom.
He persuaded venture capital mover-and-shaker Fred Wilson to sink $250,000 in FreeLoader, a personalized news site that Pincus co-founded. Within a year, FreeLoader was sold for $38 million to online news company Individual.
Then there was a blur of activity. Start-up Support.com, which helps businesses diagnose and fix PCs from remote locations, was founded in 1997 and went public in 2000. Pincus invested in several companies, including Napster and Friendster. In 2003, he started social-networking firm Tribe Networks. The company was sold to Cisco Systems in 2007.
Zynga, meanwhile, is making moves to wean itself from Facebook as a platform where most of its customers play its games. In October, Zynga discussed plans for its own platform, code-named Project Z. Zynga has a deal with Facebook that runs through 2015. Pincus has also negotiated a deal that led Google to buy a 3% stake in Zynga.
In five years, during the bite of a financial crisis, Andreessen says Pincus "built the most important video-gaming company in the world. He trained a new generation of consumers on new games. And he created a new business model" with the sale of virtual goods.
"He is committed to growing Zynga into a leader in casual gaming," says Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of DreamWorks Animation, which has done marketing deals with Zynga. "This is a world that is in its infancy. These are its earliest days, and we have yet to see its full potential."
Pincus has proven critics wrong, moncler jackets for women says Andreessen, who expects him to aggressively expand Zynga worldwide in the next decade.
As part of a tax deal reached late last year
The logjam appeared to have broken on Thursday, one day before the government would have been forced to close its doors because of a lack of money, the result of a tangled dispute over taxes and spending.moncler jackets The issues have become a kind of holy grail among politicians facing elections in less than 11 months.
At issue are the extension of a reduced tax Americans automatically pay into the Social Security pension plan, extended federal government payments to the unemployed and funding to keep the government working.
President Obama and the Democrats had wanted to pay for the extended Social Security tax break, a reduction in the so-called payroll tax, by imposing a 1.9 percent surtax on incomes of the richest Americans, those taking home more than $1 million a year. They apparently have dropped that demand and will find the money to finance continued cuts through higher fees charged by the mixed public-private organization that guarantees home mortgages.
Congressional Republicans had steadfastly refused to accept any increase on taxes, a bedrock issue for the party.
A new poll shows Americans hold members of Congress from both parties in record low regard, but see Republicans as more to blame for the legislature's poor record of lawmaking this year.
That combined with a new Associated Press-GfK poll that shows Americans broadly in favor of an extension of the Social Security tax cut and a lengthened period of unemployment compensation payments may have helped engender the new mood for compromise.
A poll released Thursday by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press found public discontent with Congress at record levels, with two-thirds of those surveyed saying current members of Congress should be voted out of office next year. By a margin of nearly two-to-one (40 percent to 23 percent ), more of those questioned by Pew blamed Republican leaders than Democratic leaders for Congress' "do-nothing" record.
The new AP-GfK poll found that most Americans, six in 10, want Congress to approve an extension of the payroll tax reduction. What's more, the dragged-out debate over the extension is just one of many issues that have kept voters furious with their leaders all year. Sixty percent said they are angry about the political situation.

With that as a background, congressional leaders began speaking about compromise.
"We can extend payroll tax relief for American workers and create new jobs and keep the government running and, frankly, we can do it in a bipartisan way," Rep. John Boehner, Republican speaker of the House of Representatives, told reporters in a turnabout from weeks of partisan sniping from both sides.
"No more show votes," Boehner said after praising earlier remarks by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, who said that lingering disagreements on a mammoth spending bill could be resolved easily: "It's just time to legislate."
Reid opened the Senate's morning session by saying he and the chamber's top Republican had held talks to resolve remaining disputes. With lawmakers itching to return home before the holidays, Reid said he and the leader of the Senate's Republican minority, Sen. Mitch McConnell, hope they can reach a deal "that would get us out of here in a reasonable time, in the next few days."
Standing just across the aisle, McConnell agreed with Reid — a stark contrast to recent days, when the two have fired sharp partisan volleys at each other.
"We're confident, optimistic we'll be able to resolve both on a bipartisan basis," said McConnell, referring to one bill that would renew the payroll tax cut and jobless benefits, and a separate spending measure that would keep federal agencies open.
Obama applied pressure of his own, saying Congress "should not and cannot" go home until it had resolved the issues.
"There's no reason why we shouldn't be able to extend these items, the payroll tax cut, u.i. before holidays," he said, using the abbreviation for unemployment insurance. "There's no reason the government should shut down over this, and I expect all of us to do what's necessary in order to do the people's business and make sure that it's done before the end of the year."
After weeks of partisan battle, a clear sign of movement came late Wednesday, when aides said Democrats were abandoning their demand for a surtax on millionaires to help finance payroll tax cuts.
Like congressional leaders, White House press secretary Jay Carney also expressed optimism Thursday about bipartisan compromise. "We believe a deal can get done," he said.
Though Obama has said repeatedly the wealthy need to "pay their fair share," Carney said the White House was open to other ways to pay for unemployment benefits and the payroll tax cut, and he downplayed what had been a major Obama argument.
"The president's priority has not been how it's paid for or raising taxes. It's been lowering taxes for the vast majority of Americans," Carney said.
As part of a tax deal reached late last year, after Republicans swept back into control in the House, the payroll tax that funds Social Security, was cut from 6.2 percent of gross income to 4.2 percent.moncler vest for men cheap. Employers were still left paying their full 6.2 percent share. Obama had proposed making the cut even deeper next year and including employers in the reduction. That quickly evaporated when the battles broke out in Congress.
On the separate spending dispute that threatened a government shutdown, House Republicans had said Wednesday night that they would try pushing a massive $1 trillion spending bill through the House on Friday to prevent a federal shutdown. Reid said Thursday that he believed remaining partisan disputes on that bill could be settled quickly.
